Of Mani-pedis and Manifestations

Hello lovelies! Consider this your biannual check-in from me. This is not one of these newsletter/blogs that has a (ahem) particularly regular schedule, shall we say. And while I wish I could report “no news is good news,” it’s probably more like “no news means she’s been figuring out how to navigate a wheelchair and what the latest bestsellers are, and is the Chapel staff doing ok, and what would Kate Bowler do in this situation? ” In other words – no news IS good news because it’s us living life, albeit in a new way.

But – first things first. I got a mani-pedi! This was no small feat friends (haha – see what I did there?). I’d been complaining for weeks that I couldn’t reach my toes anymore, and getting in the car to get to an appointment is also a Herculean effort. So when my husband arranged for an in-home mani-pedi I assumed he was as tired of looking at my toes as I was and I said, “sign-me up!” I literally cried when they left because it was the best thing ever. These two were so joyful, and they brought this high energy of fun and love. They pampered me for almost an hour. They offered to get me tea (in my own home!), and said things like, “For you? Anything.” Love comes in all shapes and sizes, including tiny little bottles of “Birthday Suit Beige.”

Astute readers will know that I am not one to regularly schedule in-home mani-pedis so you might be asking yourselves, “what’s going on here?” Well, my mobility has declined a lot lately, so much that I really can’t be at church on Sunday mornings because it requires too much stamina and strength – Sundays, stamina and strength: three things every pastor needs! For the record, yes, I am doing PT, lymphatic Drainage Massage, acupuncture, you name it. I have tried all the “things” to alleviate pain and get me walking again.

The fact that I needed someone to come into my home to take care of this basic need is a mani-festation of my current circumstances (see what I did there, again? ) I have a lot of fluid swelling and weakness in my legs which is preventing me from moving freely. The good news is I can be largely pain-free for most of the day thanks to pain medication.

If you reach out and I’m slow to respond (or never do), please don’t take it personally. I am so blessed by the prayers and blessings of so many.  I may get there. I may not. What I do know is that I am not alone. There is such comfort in that. And if I can have a little Birthday Suit Beige now and then, I’ll take it.

  5. Dearest Charla,

Thank you for your mani-pedi update and your letter to all of us—(congregants).

I am incredibly saddened to hear of the horrific pain you must be enduring just attempting to move, let alone get in a car to travel anywhere. Please know that I am thinking and praying for you throughout the day. I am looking for a miracle to happen. I hope you are asking God for a miracle for yourself. I just started reading Dr. Mark Siegel’s new book about Miracles. It is amazing what the power of pray can do. Maybe we should hold a vigil at the Chapel just to pray, with great strength and faith, for a Miracle for you. We need to feel the power of God’s Holy Spirit enter the Chapel to heal you! I constantly pray, using the vision of the woman with the bleeding disorder for 12 years just touching Jesus’ robe and getting healed. I pray that He will shed a beam of light or a slight touch to heal you and rid you of your pain in an instant.

Billie mentioned from the altar that you would not be in the Chapel for 7 weeks. Is that a timeline for something since it is after Christmas?

Love and strength are coming your way in abundance!

  9. Hi Charla,

You are such an incredible soul and healing influence to the rest of us who are struggling with life. What a gift you have been to so many. What I think of when I think of you is my college roommate’s beautiful blonde little sister! I wish I knew you better. I have watched your life online, but it’s not the same as in person.

Just wanted to say Hi and send you love and beautiful white healing light. Be good to yourself.

    Love Susette

  11. Charla,

My heart goes out to you. My eyes tear at church every Sunday when you zoom in from your home and say or read a prayer. You have made a huge difference in my life and many others. My prayer and intention for you is “God will give Charla a strong inner peace and healing .” I pray for you when I walk in the woods among the beauty of the Aspen trees and always during my morning meditation and prayers. Sending you energy, strength, and virtual hug.

    Love,

About Charla

In March of 2023 our dear Charla was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer which had spread to the lymph nodes. Charla is a beloved friend and pastor to so many. In an effort to keep all of those who care about her in the loop, and lighten the communication load that would inevitably fall on Charla and her family, we have established this blog. Please post your comments of positivity, prayer, encouragement, and inspiration on this site, or mail encouraging messages via snail mail.

Prior to this diagnosis Charla had tossed around the idea of starting a podcast. With a background in PR and TV, years of expertise teaching and writing on parenting and other topics, a Doctorate in Ministry from Duke University, and 13 years under her belt of co-pastoring and leading a church, Charla has a deep well of wisdom to draw from and “kick around” in conversation in a podcast setting. We can’t wait to “kick it” (slang for “hang out”) with Charla in the years ahead and hear her declare triumph over this diagnosis.

For now, we join Charla in solidarity, with love and constant prayer, as she kicks cancer out of her body.

Kick it with Charla. And lift her up in prayer.
